Canberra retaining wall searches centre on two materials, concrete and timber. Here concrete sleepers to one metre high run $330–$660 a lineal metre and timber sleepers $220–$495, while the 1.5 m sleeper wall that also gets asked about runs $440–$1,050. Finished, a 10 lm wall standing a metre tall totals $2,750–$7,700. In the ACT the approval limits are lower close to a side or rear boundary than in the middle of the block, so where the wall sits on your land matters as much as how tall it is.

Canberra stone retaining walls: boulder, sandstone or gabion

A 10-metre stone wall in Canberra three ways

Our Canberra table prices stone walls by the metre: a boulder wall at $275–$660, a gabion wall (rock-filled wire baskets) at $330–$880 and a sandstone wall at $385–$770. For 10 metres at the typical rates that is $4,400 in boulders, $5,500 in gabions or $6,050 in sandstone, before an engineering certificate ($550–$2,200) if the wall needs one.

Factors affecting retaining wall cost in Canberra

What Affects Retaining Wall Costs in Canberra

DA and BA: two separate limits

ACT planning rules let a fill retaining wall skip a development application if it stands no more than 0.4m above ground when it is in front of the building line or within 1.5m of the side or back boundary, and no more than 1m on its low side anywhere else. Building approval is assessed on its own: none is needed to 1.2m, and a wall that meets the exempt building code can reach 1.5m. Beyond that, allow $495–$1,975 and $550–$2,200.

Frosty winters and timber

The capital is cool-temperate country, NCC climate zone 7, and on an average July night the airport gauge dips to -0.1 °C (BOM averages). Treated pine at $220–$495 is the cheaper start against concrete sleepers, but timber sitting in cold, wet soil through winter does not last like concrete. Hardwood sleepers ($310–$660) are the middle path. Frost also matters on the day: footings should not be poured into frozen ground.

Rockwalls and stone

Rockwall builders are a common Canberra search. Placed boulders run $275–$660 a metre and suit a sloping garden, though they need an excavator and a truck with room to get in. Sandstone blocks are $385–$770, and gabion cages of rock $330–$880. Ask whether the rock price includes delivery, since haulage can add noticeably to the bill.

Dry, but not drainage-free

Canberra is dry by coastal standards, with about 616 mm a year and no month averaging more than November's 64.4 mm; June is the driest at 40.5 mm (BOM averages). Even so, a thunderstorm can soak the soil behind a wall in an afternoon, so slotted pipe, gravel and filter fabric at $33–$88 a metre are still part of a sound quote.

Townhouses and shared land

Separate houses are 63.2% of ACT dwellings, well under the national 72.3%, while 17.2% are townhouses or semis and 19.4% apartments (ABS 2021 Census). Where a wall stands on common property in a units or townhouse scheme, replacing it is a decision for the owners corporation, not one owner. In a tight courtyard with no machine access, a five-metre garden wall half a metre high costs $1,100–$3,075.

Checking who you hire

The territory's public licence registers are run by Access Canberra; search the contractor or their business there before signing. Ask for a certificate of currency for public liability insurance, make sure you have their full name, street address and ABN, and pay only when the job is finished, against an itemised invoice.

Pulling out an old wall

Getting rid of a sagging timber wall costs $55–$200 a metre on top of the replacement. On a block with fill of unknown quality, a soil report ($550–$2,750) gives the engineer real data for the footings rather than a guess.

How to Save Money on Retaining Wall Cost in Canberra

1
Mark where the wall will sit before you collect quotes; close to a side or back boundary (within 1.5m) the DA-free height drops to 0.4m.
2
Avoid pouring footings in the depths of winter, when Canberra mornings fall below freezing, and book the concrete for a milder spell.
3
Ask every builder whether the price includes trucking in the rock or sleepers, and carting the spoil away.
4
In a townhouse complex, take the plan to the owners corporation before anyone starts digging.
5
Request the contractor's certificate of currency for public liability insurance before the first payment.
6
For a wall heading to 1.5m, confirm in writing whether it meets the exempt building code or needs building approval.
