What Affects Retaining Wall Costs in Brisbane
Choosing the material
Besides sleepers, Brisbane builders quote block or besser walls at $350–$750, boulders at $250–$600, gabion baskets at $300–$800 and hardwood sleepers at $280–$600. Timber is cheapest to start but sits in damp soil through a humid summer, so ask how long the builder expects it to last against concrete or block.
Per metre or per square metre?
Many people search for a concrete sleeper price per square metre. At one metre high, a lineal metre of wall is one square metre of face, so $300–$600 answers both questions. At one and a half metres the typical lineal-metre price of $600 works out to about $400 per square metre of face, set beside the shorter wall's typical $450; the taller wall also needs deeper post holes and more concrete.
The Queensland approval line
Under Queensland's building rules a retaining wall needs no building approval only when the wall and the soil it holds together measure 1m or less, no load such as a building or driveway sits over the ground behind it, and it stands at least 1.5m from a building or another retaining wall. Miss any one of those and allow $450–$1,800 for approval, plus $500–$2,000 for an engineer. Your council's planning scheme can still apply to minor work.
Storm season and drainage
Brisbane's rain is concentrated in summer: February averages 176.1 mm and March 149.2 mm, against 28.6 mm in September (BOM averages).
