What Affects Retaining Wall Costs in Sydney
Concrete sleepers, metre by metre
Concrete sleepers draw more price questions than any other walling material. At one metre high the per-metre rate, $345–$690, is also the cost per square metre of wall face. Raise the wall to one and a half metres and the rate becomes $460–$1,100, because the steel posts go deeper and the footings get bigger.
Sandstone and other stone
Sandstone is the traditional Sydney walling stone and costs $400–$805 per lineal metre, typically $630. If you like the look of natural stone for less, a boulder wall is $290–$690, and a gabion wall of rock-filled wire baskets is $345–$920. Each needs a mini excavator or crane truck that can reach the site.
NSW exempt limits
NSW treats a retaining wall as exempt development, needing no planning approval, only when it is no more than 600mm high, at least 1m from each lot boundary and at least 2m from any other retaining wall, with drainage lines connected to the site's stormwater system. Outside those limits, budget for the engineer at $575–$2,300 and, for a wall over a metre, approval at $520–$2,075.
