How the calculation works
Volume is length × width × thickness, with all three in metres. The example the calculator opens with is 6 m × 4 m at 100 mm thick: 24 m² of slab and 2.4 m³ of concrete. With 5% added for waste and uneven ground that is 2.52 m³ to order.
Bags. Cement Australia says approximately 110 of its 20 kg Concrete Mix bags are required to fill a cubic metre, so the example needs 278 bags. Other products can differ, so check the bag you are buying.
Cost is the area multiplied by the per-square-metre row for the finish you pick. Those rows are not adjusted for thickness, so if your slab is thicker than usual, ask the concreter to price it.

How do I calculate how much concrete I need?
Multiply the length by the width by the thickness, all in metres. A slab 6 m long, 4 m wide and 100 mm thick is 2.4 m³. Add a margin for waste and uneven ground: at 5% that example becomes 2.52 m³.
How many 20 kg bags of concrete make a cubic metre?
Cement Australia says approximately 110 of its 20 kg Concrete Mix bags are required to fill a cubic metre. The calculator uses that figure. Check the bag you buy, because other products can differ.
How much does a concrete slab cost per square metre?

Does the cost estimate change with slab thickness?
No. The price rows in our guides are per square metre and are not adjusted for thickness, so the estimate uses area only. The volume and bag count do change with thickness.
