Tiling cost calculator: laying cost for common jobs

Tilers price per square metre, and the job type sets the rate. These are the calculator's estimates on our national tiling figures, first for laying only and then with mid-range porcelain tiles supplied (with 10% extra for cuts).

JobLaying onlyWith mid-range porcelain
Bathroom floor, 2.5 m × 2 m$200 to $450$475 to $1,110
Laundry floor, 2 m × 1.8 m$144 to $324$342 to $799
Kitchen splashback, 3 m × 0.6 m$72 to $180$171 to $418
Open-plan floor, 7 m × 5 m$1,400 to $3,150$3,325 to $7,770

Wet areas usually need waterproofing first: our national guide lists it at $35 to $80 per square metre. Tick it in the calculator to add it.

How the calculation works

Tiles needed. The area is length × width, plus any other area you add. The calculator increases it by your allowance for cuts and breakages, then divides by the area of one tile and rounds up. The example it opens with is 3 m × 2.5 m (7.5 m²) in 600 × 600 mm tiles with 10% extra: 8.25 m² to buy, which is 23 tiles.

Cost. The laying rows in our guide are labour per square metre, so the estimate multiplies the area by the row for the job you pick. If you want the tiles priced too, choose a supply row and it is multiplied by the area to buy. Removing old tiles, waterproofing and floor levelling each add their own row.

Frequently asked questions

How do I work out how many tiles I need?

Multiply the length by the width to get the area, add an allowance for cuts and breakages, then divide by the area of one tile and round up. 7.5 m² with 10% extra is 8.25 m², which is 23 tiles at 600 × 600 mm.

How much extra should I allow for cuts?

The calculator opens with 10% and you can change it. Layouts with more cuts use more tiles, so ask your tiler or tile shop what they recommend for your pattern.

How much does tiling cost per square metre?

Our national tiling guide puts standard floor tiling at $40 to $90 per square metre for labour, with $60 typical. Large format floor tiles are $60 to $110 and standard wall tiling $40 to $100 per square metre. Choose your city in the calculator to use that city's figures.

Does the estimate include the tiles?

Only if you choose a supply row. The laying rows are labour. Our national guide lists tile supply at $20 to $55 per square metre for budget ceramic, $50 to $120 for mid-range porcelain and $100 to $250 for premium natural stone.

What do waterproofing and tile removal add?

Our national guide lists waterproofing for wet areas at $35 to $80 per square metre and removal of existing tiles at $20 to $55 per square metre. Tick either box to add it for the same area.

How much does it cost to tile a bathroom floor?

On our national figures, laying a 2.5 m × 2 m bathroom floor comes to $200 to $450, or $475 to $1,110 with mid-range porcelain tiles supplied. Waterproofing is extra.
