This flooring calculator works out the square metres of hybrid, laminate, vinyl plank or timber to order, with an allowance for cuts, and the boxes if you enter the coverage on the box. It is also a carpet calculator: it works out the lineal metres off a 3.66 m roll and where a join falls. Then it prices the floor supplied and installed in your city.

Carpet calculator: lineal metres off the roll
Carpet is sold off a roll by the lineal metre, and Godfrey Hirst's residential broadloom is 3.66 m wide. The calculator runs the carpet along the room, one drop for each 3.66 m of width, so a room wider than the roll needs a join and leaves an offcut. That is why carpet for a room can come to more than its floor area.
| Room | Floor area | Carpet off the roll | Carpet installed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bedroom, 3.6 m × 3.2 m | 11.52 m² | 3.6 lineal metres | $518 to $1,267 |
| Main bedroom, 4.2 m × 3.8 m | 15.96 m² | 8.4 lineal metres | $718 to $1,756 |
| Living room, 5.5 m × 4.5 m | 24.75 m² | 11 lineal metres | $1,114 to $2,723 |
| Rumpus room, 6 m × 5 m | 30 m² | 12 lineal metres | $1,350 to $3,300 |
How the calculation works
Area to order. The floor area is length × width. Imperial Flooring's installation guide says to allow a minimum of 10% additional flooring for cutting waste and future maintenance, so the calculator opens at 10%. The example it opens with is a 5 m × 4 m room in hybrid: 20 m² of floor and 22 m² to order. Enter the coverage printed on the box and it counts the boxes.
Carpet comes off a roll, so it is bought by the lineal metre. Godfrey Hirst's residential broadloom has a roll width of 3.66 m. The calculator runs the carpet along the room and needs one drop for every 3.66 m of the room's width, so a room wider than that has a join and an offcut. Your installer plans the joins, so treat it as a guide.
Cost is the floor area multiplied by the supply-and-install row in our flooring guide for the floor you pick. Removing the old floor and levelling the subfloor add their own rows per square metre, and skirting boards are priced per metre around the room.

Frequently asked questions
How much extra flooring should I order?
Imperial Flooring's installation guide says to allow a minimum of 10% additional flooring for cutting waste and future maintenance. Rooms with many corners or a diagonal layout use more.
How much does flooring cost per square metre?
Our national flooring guide puts hybrid at $55 to $120 per square metre supplied and installed, laminate at $50 to $100, vinyl plank at $50 to $100 and engineered timber at $110 to $200. Choose your city in the calculator to use that city's figures.
What does removing the old floor add?
Our national guide lists old floor removal and disposal at $8 to $25 per square metre and subfloor levelling or preparation at $20 to $90 per square metre.
How much does floor sanding and polishing cost?
Our national guide lists timber floor sanding and polishing at $30 to $70 per square metre, with $45 typical.
How does a carpet calculator work out the metres?
It runs the carpet along the room and counts one drop for every 3.66 m of the room's width, the width of a residential broadloom roll. A 4.2 m wide room needs two drops, so its length is bought twice and a join runs along the room. Your installer plans the joins, so use it as a guide.
