What Affects Tiling Costs in Sunshine Coast
Patios and the February rain
Patio and outdoor laying runs $55–$120, with slip-rated porcelain to go down at $39–$115. The Sunshine Coast Airport station is wettest in February at 217.5 mm, and every month from December to March tops 150 mm (BOM averages). Adhesive and grout need dry days to cure, and an outdoor surface needs a slip rating for wet feet and a fall towards its drain.
Membranes under wet-area tiles
The National Construction Code calls for a waterproof membrane beneath tiles in showers, bathrooms and laundries, costing $38–$88 a square metre. QBCC licenses waterproofing as a separate trade class, and the QBCC licence rule kicks in once building work reaches $3,300. A bathroom tiled with supply included, typically $4,850, is above that line, so home warranty insurance applies too.
Laying over the old tiles
A common question is whether new tiles can go straight over old ones. Doing so saves the strip-out, priced at $22–$61 a square metre, but only when the existing tiles are firmly bonded and flat. It raises the floor at doorways and can leave a step at the shower. Where the base is out of level, preparation adds $16–$55 before any new tile goes down.
Asbestos before demolition
Wall and floor sheeting in an older bathroom can contain asbestos, so test it before anything is broken out. Queensland Health lets a homeowner remove 10 square metres or less of non-friable asbestos without a certificate, though safe work procedures still apply. Sunshine Coast Council wants a disposal application at least 48 hours before you bring asbestos to its landfill, and loads beyond a small domestic amount need a waste tracking certificate.
Format, pattern and stone
Big 600×1200 tiles cost more to lay than standard sizes, $66–$120 against $44–$99, because they demand a flatter base and two sets of hands. Mosaic and feature work is dearer again at $88–$185, and marble, travertine or limestone runs $68–$145. Herringbone and diagonal layouts add cuts, so agree the pattern before the quote is final.
