What Affects Concreting Costs in Brisbane
Picking a finish
Coloured concrete runs $95–$200 per square metre, stamped or stencilled $120–$200 and exposed aggregate $120–$200, all above the plain rate because of the extra labour on the surface. On a whole driveway the typical spread is $4,500 for a plain broom finish and $6,500 for exposed aggregate.
Storm season and the pour date
February is Brisbane's wettest month at 176.1 mm, while September averages just 28.6 mm, the driest of the year (BOM averages). A storm on a fresh pour can pit the surface, and a soaked base can push the job back a week. Summer days near 30.4 °C also make concrete stiffen quickly, so crews often start at first light. Brisbane City Council's driveway permit
You need a council permit to build or change the crossing between the road and your block. A self-assessment permit costs $20.30 when the driveway meets the setback and width rules, such as one metre from a light or power pole and no wider than 4 m for a single garage or 5 m for a double. Anything outside those rules goes to full assessment at $293.40. A permit stays valid for 12 months.
What council wants across the verge
The owner, not council, builds and maintains the driveway, and that includes the kerb and channel beside it. Council's technical standard calls for a 125 mm slab outside the boundary, a gradient no steeper than 1:6, and prefers stencilled or broom-finished concrete there. If you want exposed aggregate on your side, ask how the finish will change at the property line.
Buying concrete by the cubic metre
A 100 mm slab uses about a tenth of a cubic metre for every square metre, so a 20 sqm shed base needs roughly 2 m³ before waste. At the typical delivered price that is about $760 for the concrete alone, with no labour, mesh, formwork or finishing. Where cars will park, many concreters move up to a 32 MPa mix, which costs more per load.
Taking out an old slab
Removal and disposal on its own is $30–$100 a square metre. At the typical rate, lifting an old 30 sqm patio adds about $1,800 to the job. Tree roots, thick old slabs and buried steel are what push removal toward the top of the band.
Polishing a floor
Grinding and sealing an existing slab runs $60–$170 per square metre, depending on how deep the grind goes and how much patching the floor needs. A brand-new slab poured and then mechanically polished is $160–$260, which suits an extension or a new granny flat floor.
How to Save Money on Concreting Cost in Brisbane
- Before paying a deposit, look your concreter up on the QBCC register: in Queensland, building work worth $3,300 or more needs a QBCC licence.
- Ask whether the quote includes the council crossing and the kerb and channel beside it, because Brisbane leaves that work and its upkeep with the property owner.
- Renters make up 35.1% of Greater Brisbane households (ABS 2021 Census); if you are one of them, get the owner's written approval before any slab or path goes in.
