Dentist Cost in Canberra (2026)
Canberra dental fees on our table run from $220–$380 for a routine visit covering the exam, scale and clean, and X-rays, up to $4,300–$7,900 for one implant, start to finish. In between sit composite fillings at $160–$430, root canals at $970–$3,650 and porcelain or zirconia crowns at $1,300–$3,000. Where your own quote lands depends on the tooth, the materials, the number of appointments and whether a specialist is involved. The ACT's public dental service helps some residents with routine care, but its adult service leaves crowns and implants to private practices, as explained below.

- What ACT public dental covers. Canberra Health Services offers adult public dental care to ACT residents who are the primary holder of a Commonwealth Seniors Health Card, a Pensioner Concession or Health Care Card, an ACT Services Access Card or a DVA Veteran Card (white or gold). It does not provide crowns, implants, braces or bridges, so that work is done privately at fees such as $1,300–$3,000 for a crown.
- Children and teenagers. The ACT child and youth dental service sees children under 5 who live in the ACT, children under 14 who live here or attend an ACT school, and under-18s who also appear on a concession card. Separately, the Child Dental Benefits Schedule covers basic care up to a capped amount for Medicare-eligible children from birth to 17, as long as a parent or the child receives an eligible payment.
- Income, mortgages and extras. Median household income in the ACT was $2,373 weekly (ABS 2021 Census), and 40.2% of households carried a mortgage, against 35% nationally. If you hold extras cover, check how it treats dental: policies differ in which services they include, and nearly all dental benefits come with a limit, whether on a single service, a year or a lifetime. One crown or implant can use up a year's limit.
- What an implant fee includes. An all-inclusive implant at $4,300–$7,900 should take in the planning scan, placing the implant, the abutment that joins it to the tooth and the crown on top. Ask whether an extraction or a bone graft, if the dentist says one is needed, sits inside that figure. The stages run over several months, so ask for a payment schedule by stage.
- Specialist or general dentist. Australia recognises 13 dental specialties, among them endodontics, periodontics, prosthodontics and oral surgery. Your treatment may be done by a general dentist or by a registered specialist, and only the second may use a specialist title. Ahpra's Register of practitioners shows the specialty for anyone who holds specialist registration, which is worth checking before you accept a referral and its extra consultation fee.
- Smaller homes, single patients. Flats and apartments make up 19.4% of ACT dwellings and one-bedroom homes 8.4%, both above the national shares of 14.2% and 5.3% (ABS 2021 Census). For an adult living alone, the routine cost to plan around is the $220–$380 visit; ask how often the dentist recommends a clean for you and whether X-rays are due this time.
Is it cheaper to extract than to save the tooth?
An extraction is $200-$600, far less than a root canal, but replacing the tooth later with an implant costs $3,500-$7,300; saving a restorable tooth is usually the lower lifetime cost.
Where a tooth is not restorable, extraction with a planned replacement is the appropriate path; ask for both options itemised.
