Migration Agent Fees in Canberra (2026)
Canberra visa work is billed in two parts: the professional fee shown on this page, and the Department of Home Affairs' own visa application charge, which no agent sets or controls. Our Canberra table prices visitor and student applications at $540–$2,700, a skilled application at $2,150–$5,400 and a partner application at $4,300–$6,500. A business sponsoring staff under subclass 482 or 186 should budget $3,250–$8,650 for everything, while review or appeal work costs $3,250–$11,000. The checks and questions below help you see where your own matter is likely to sit before you agree to anything.

- Checking the practitioner. The Register of Migration Agents, kept by OMARA, can be searched by location, by name or by MARN, and it also lists registered agents working outside Australia. For a lawyer, ask to see the Australian practising certificate. Exempt people, such as your sponsor or a close family member, may help with an ACT application, but they must not charge you a fee for it.
- Income against the fee. Median household income in the ACT was $2,373 a week and median rent $450 a week (ABS 2021 Census). Those figures are a useful frame when weighing a partner fee of $4,300–$6,500 against filling in the forms yourself. You don't have to use a registered agent to apply, although OMARA notes that professional help matters most when a case is complex.
- Leases and letters. About three in ten ACT households rent (30.7%, ABS 2021 Census). If a lease ends while your application is open, Department letters can go astray; appointing your agent as authorised recipient sends written communication to them instead. Should you later change agents, end that appointment separately on Form 956A, or the old agent keeps receiving your correspondence.
- Visa type and headcount. The subclass sets the starting band and the people on the file move the price within it. ACT homes average 2.5 occupants (ABS 2021 Census); when a partner or children join the application, each brings another bundle of records. Find out whether the quote covers the whole family, and what a request for further information from the Department would add.
- Conflicts of interest. A registered agent cannot act for you while holding a conflict of interest, such as a referral commission from a school, unless they tell you about it and you confirm in writing that you still want them. Students comparing Canberra agents can simply ask whether the agent is paid by any provider they recommend.
- Review work. If a decision goes against you and the matter goes to a review tribunal, preparation and representation are priced at $3,250–$11,000 in our Canberra table. Registered agents and lawyers can both represent you there. The size of the record and the amount of new evidence to prepare decide where a review falls in that band, so ask for a written scope first.
Agent, lawyer or self-lodge?
Use an OMARA-registered agent or immigration lawyer for partner, skilled and employer-sponsored applications where the non-refundable government charge alone runs into thousands, and for any refusal or review.
Straightforward visitor or working holiday applications with clean histories are routinely self-lodged through ImmiAccount.
