Dentist Cost in Darwin (2026)
Tooth implants and crowns are what Darwin searchers ask us about most, and they are the two widest bands on our table: $4,200–$7,650 for one implant with every stage included, and $1,250–$2,950 for a crown in porcelain or zirconia. Everyday care is narrower, with a routine examination and clean, X-rays included, at $210–$370, a composite filling at $160–$420 and a root canal at $950–$3,550. Where a Darwin quote falls in each band is shaped by the tooth involved, what it is made from, the lab used, the number of appointments and any specialist involvement.

- What an implant price covers. Our Darwin band of $4,200–$7,650 assumes every stage is in the price: the planning scan, placing the titanium post, the abutment and the crown on top. A quote that looks low may cover the surgery alone. If the dentist says an extraction or bone graft is needed first, ask whether it is included, and how many months the stages will take.
- Crown material and the lab. A porcelain or zirconia crown, $1,250–$2,950 on our table, is made by a dental laboratory, either off site or with milling equipment in the practice, and the lab fee and material are built into the price. Ask which material the quote assumes, whether a temporary crown is supplied while you wait, and whether the fitting visit is included.
- Veneers need their own quote. Veneers are not one of the five services in our table, and because they are cosmetic they fall outside the Child Dental Benefits Schedule. Extras policies do not all cover every service, so cosmetic work may be limited or left out. Ask for veneers to be priced per tooth, and whether the quote is for lab-made porcelain or composite built up in the chair.
- A renting city. Renting households make up 43.8% of Greater Darwin, against 30.6% nationally, and outright ownership covers only 17.3% of households (ABS 2021 Census). If you have moved here from elsewhere, ask your previous dentist to forward your file and your latest X-rays. A new practice that has them may not need a repeat set of images, which keeps the first visit cheaper.
- Public care and child benefits. Ask the Northern Territory Government's health department whether you qualify for public dental care before paying private rates, especially if you hold a concession card. Families on an eligible payment can use the Child Dental Benefits Schedule for children up to 17 who are Medicare-eligible; the benefit is capped but includes check-ups, fillings and root canals, and no application is needed.
- Who places the implant. Every dentist must be registered with the Dental Board of Australia, and Ahpra's Register of practitioners lists each one with any conditions on their practice. Implant surgery is performed either by a general dentist or, on referral, by an oral surgeon or a periodontist. Those are protected specialist titles, so check the register before a referral adds a separate consultation fee.
Is it cheaper to extract than to save the tooth?
An extraction is $200-$600, far less than a root canal, but replacing the tooth later with an implant costs $3,500-$7,300; saving a restorable tooth is usually the lower lifetime cost.
Where a tooth is not restorable, extraction with a planned replacement is the appropriate path; ask for both options itemised.
