Bookkeeper Fees in Darwin (2026)
Looking for a bookkeeper's hourly rate in Darwin? Our table puts it at $50–$130 per hour, and it is a useful yardstick even when a Top End quote is not billed by the hour. Fixed monthly packages run $260–$790 per month for a small operator, $790–$1,600 per month for a busier business with several accounts, and $1,050–$2,650 per month once staff and activity statements are part of the work. Trade in the Territory can rise and fall with the wet and dry seasons, so ask how a package treats your busy and quiet months before you commit to one.

- Paying by the hour. An hourly arrangement at $50–$130 per hour works when the paperwork is light or irregular, such as a contractor raising a few invoices a month. Straight data entry and bank matching are not on the TPB list of services kept for registered agents. Ask for a time sheet with every invoice so you can see where the hours went.
- Wet season and dry season. The wet, from November to April, doubles as cyclone season (BOM); the dry covers May to October. If your takings swing with those seasons, the number of transactions to code and reconcile swings too. Ask whether a package price is fixed across the year or reviewed each quarter, and whether quiet months can drop back to hourly billing.
- Records through the storms. January is Darwin's wettest month, with 432.1 mm on average (BOM averages), and a storm that shuts your premises should not take your books with it. Business.gov.au advises backing up digital records and keeping a secure off-site copy, which may include cloud storage. Ask which system the bookkeeper uses and confirm you hold every password to it yourself.
- Landlords alongside business. More than two in five Greater Darwin households rent (43.8%), while 17.3% hold their home without a loan (ABS 2021 Census), so a large share of the city's homes belong to landlords. If a rental sits alongside your business, ask the bookkeeper to keep it in its own file, and take questions about the property on your tax return to a registered tax agent.
- Staff, super and contractors. Moving to $1,050–$2,650 per month buys more than pay runs. The Tax Practitioners Board allows registered BAS agents to handle super payments made through a clearing house and, where your business must lodge one, complete and lodge the taxable payments annual report, as well as handle STP payroll reporting. Tell the bookkeeper how many employees and contractors you pay, and how often.
- Registered or not. Charging for BAS work is limited to registered agents. The risk lands on you too: when an unregistered preparer lodges late or gets a statement wrong and a tax shortfall follows, the ATO may penalise you, and you lose the safe harbour protection that comes with engaging someone registered.
- Rescue jobs. Catch-up work is priced as a project, $530–$3,150 in our table, separate from the monthly fee. The quote turns on the number of missing months, the accounts involved and whether the receipts survived. Bring whatever statements and ATO letters you have, because a bookkeeper who can see the whole gap can give a firm figure rather than an estimate.
Bookkeeper, accountant or do it yourself?
Engage a bookkeeper once you have GST registration, staff, or more than a few dozen transactions a month; a clean file also cuts your accountant's year-end fee.
A sole trader with a handful of monthly transactions can keep clean books in software and hand a reconciled file to an accountant at year end.
