How old is the house?
SafeWork SA's rule of thumb is that a home built or renovated before the mid-1980s is highly likely to contain asbestos products, and one from the mid-1980s to 1990 is likely to. Outside, check the eaves, the electrical box, old fences and sheds; inside, the bathroom, laundry, kitchen and old floor coverings. A whole-house survey is $300–$800, and testing just one to three samples costs less.

SafeWork SA must be notified by the licence holder before removal starts. Air monitoring during Class A or Class B work, and the clearance inspection and certificate after Class A work, are done by a licensed asbestos assessor rather than the removal crew. Allow $400–$2,000 for that service, and ask whether it sits inside the removalist's quote or is billed by the assessor directly.
Disposal without a levy
In South Australia asbestos must go to a landfill or transfer station licensed by the EPA to take it, never into the household bin or a council hard rubbish collection. The state waste levy does not apply to asbestos, though gate fees still do; a removalist typically charges $300–$500 for disposal and tip fees. Anyone bagging a small amount must double-wrap it in plastic thicker than 200 microns, sealed with duct tape and labelled.
Hot suits, wet roofs
