What Affects Gas Fitting Costs in Darwin
Cylinders or a gas main
The only Darwin natural gas distribution network on the national gas pipeline register is a 19 km system that its operator describes as serving industrial users. Before paying for an LPG to natural gas conversion ($400–$1,500), ask your fitter and gas retailer whether a main runs past your property at all. If none does, a conversion has nothing to connect to.
Wet season, dry season
Darwin's wet season runs from November to April, the same months BOM counts as cyclone season, and January averages 432.1 mm of rain at the airport (BOM averages). A new gas line run ($500–$2,000) or a meter shift ($600–$2,500) means trenching and fixing pipe outdoors, where storms cost days. June and July each average under 2 mm, the easier window for outside work.
Renting and gas faults
Under the Northern Territory's Residential Tenancies Act a gas leak, a breakdown of the gas supply and a failed cooking appliance all count as emergency repairs. The tenant notifies the landlord in writing, and if the repair has not been made or arranged within 5 business days, the Tribunal can be asked to order it. Keep a copy of the notice and the date it went to the landlord or agent.
Certificate and compliance plate

If you smell gas
NT WorkSafe's order of steps is to switch off pilot lights and appliances, open the windows and doors, leave and ring Fire and Emergency Services on 000, turn the gas off at the cylinder or meter if it is safe to, then call your gas supplier's emergency number. A fitter comes after that, and leak detection and repair runs $200–$600, more after hours.
Units and verandah barbecues

In a unit block, gas pipework and meters can be shared, so check who manages the building's common property before a fitter moves anything.
