Single vs Double Glazing Costs in Sydney

Sydney sits in NCC climate zone 5 (warm temperate). Single-glazed glass is $150–$1,500 a window here, a retrofit double-glazed unit $400–$1,200 and a failed unit $300–$1,200. NSW lifted new homes to 7 stars through BASIX on 1 October 2023.

Glass Types and What They Cost

Float (annealed) glass

The base glass for ordinary windows; replacing a single-glazed pane is $150–$1,500 in the Sydney table.

Toughened (safety) glass

Glass in doors must be Grade A safety glazing under the NCC.

Double-glazed (IGU)

A sealed double unit: a failed one is $300–$1,200 a window to replace.

Emergency and Broken Window Repair in Sydney

A Sydney after-hours call-out or board-up is $150–$600; a minor repair where the frame is sound is $120–$500. If it was door glass, an unframed door needs toughened safety glass at least 10 mm thick.

Shower Screens, Splashbacks & Mirrors

A framed shower screen is $400–$1,200 and a frameless one $800–$3,000 in the Sydney table. Bathroom glass whose lowest edge sits under 2.0 m above the floor or shower base must be safety glass. A splashback is $450–$1,500.

Energy Efficiency: Is Double Glazing Worth It in Sydney?

The NSW Government puts double glazing at about $600–$2,000+ a window installed, and its Home Energy Saver zero-interest loans can pay for it — open with no closing date as of October 2026. Up to 40% of a home’s heating energy can be lost through windows.

What Affects Glazier Costs in Sydney

Safety glass the code requires

Door glass has to be Grade A safety glazing under the NCC, as does any framed side panel closer than 300 mm to a doorway. Glazing in kitchens, bathrooms and showers whose lowest sight line is under 2.0 m above the floor or shower base falls under the same human-impact rules. A broken door pane cannot be swapped for plain float glass, and a sliding door panel is $350–$1,100.

Float, toughened, laminated or double

Plain float glass is the standard pane in an ordinary window. Toughened glass is stronger and breaks into small pieces, while laminated glass holds together on its interlayer when it cracks. Neither insulates better on its own: the YourHome guide says toughened glass has no thermal or acoustic benefit over other glass of the same thickness. For comfort the step up is a sealed double-glazed unit, which is $300–$1,200 when one fails.

Apartments and upper floors

Flats and apartments make up 30.7% of Greater Sydney dwellings, more than double the 14.2% share nationally (ABS 2021 Census). Glass above ground level may have to be fitted from inside, by two glaziers, or with access equipment, and a large balcony door panel needs extra hands. Ask whether the quote covers carrying glass up stairs, booking the lift and parking near the building.

Double glazing and the Home Energy Saver loan

There is no Australian Government rebate for double glazing, but NSW homeowners and landlords with a combined household income of up to $210,000 can apply for a Home Energy Saver zero-interest loan of up to $15,000 to fit it. Energy NSW puts the saving at $500 or more a year on heating and cooling, depending on the home. Retrofitting double glazing into existing frames is $400–$1,200 a window.

Homes near bushland

The NSW Rural Fire Service lists replacing glass with toughened or laminated safety glass as a bushfire retrofit, warns that glazing is highly exposed to radiant heat and flying debris, and says metallic screening may be needed. If your home backs onto bush and sits on bush fire prone land, tell the glazier before they quote, because thicker or treated glass is priced above a standard pane.

Licence and insurance on big jobs

In NSW, residential building or trade work worth more than $5,000 in labour and materials, GST included, needs a contractor licence, and on home building work over $20,000 you should check the business holds valid insurance before paying any deposit. A single pane is nowhere near those lines, but a whole-home reglaze ($8,000–$40,000) is always past the first and can pass the second at the top of its band.

Showers, splashbacks and mirrors

A framed shower screen is $400–$1,200 and a frameless one $800–$3,000; where a bathroom panel or door has an exposed edge, the NCC calls for toughened safety glass of 6 mm or more. Glass splashbacks run $450–$1,500 fitted and mirrors for a wall or vanity $200–$750; printed colours and custom shapes cost extra.

How to Save Money on Glazier Cost in Sydney

1
If the glass went in a storm or a break-in, call the insurer first, then ask whether the board-up fee comes off the price of the replacement.
2
Send the glazier a photo and the pane's width and height, so the phone quote is close before anyone drives across Sydney.
3
Ask whether a door, low window or bathroom pane legally needs safety glass before accepting a cheaper float-glass price, and look for the etched safety mark on the finished pane.
4
Have every cracked or fogged window done in one visit, so the call-out is shared across several panes.
5
Planning a whole-home reglaze? Sydney's wettest months are June (133.1 mm) and March (131.6 mm), while September is the driest at 68.1 mm (BOM averages), so a spring start leaves fewer days with frames open to rain.
6
Check Home Energy Saver loan eligibility before signing a double-glazing quote, and ask for Low-E glass in a thermally broken frame if aluminium is being replaced.

Glazier Cost in Sydney by Job Size

Quick answerIn Sydney the size of a glass job depends on floors and panes: a sliding door panel is $350–$1,100 a panel, a failed double-glazed unit is $300–$1,200 a window, and an after-hours board-up is $150–$600.

Say a storm takes out three double-glazed units in a Sydney house, with a board-up first and the units swapped afterwards. The board-up at $150–$600 and three units at $300–$1,200 a window come to $1,050–$4,200. The two visits are priced apart, so the board-up row can be checked on its own before the permanent glass is ordered.

Access moves a Sydney job of this size more than the pane does. Panes on an upper floor can mean glass passed in from inside, a second glazier on the job or access equipment on site, and a big balcony door panel calls for more people. Stairs, a lift booking and parking add to the quote, and a home near bushland adds thicker or treated glass.

Glazier Cost in Sydney: What the Quote Should Include

Sydney homes include apartments with glass above ground level and houses that back onto bushland, so access and glass type matter as much as the pane itself. Itemising each of those lines lets two Sydney quotes be compared fairly.
