Switchboard upgrade cost in Sydney

Sydney home switchboard and meter box on a brick wall - electrician cost sydney

If your Sydney home still has ceramic fuses or trips every time the kettle and heater run together, your switchboard is overdue. Here's what a switchboard upgrade actually costs in 2026, what drives the price, and when it's legally required.

Quick answer — switchboard upgrade cost in Sydney

ScopeTypical Sydney range (2026)
Basic switchboard upgrade (fuse box to circuit breakers + safety switches)$800 – $1,500
Full switchboard replacement (new enclosure, RCBOs, surge protection)$1,500 – $3,500
Three-phase board, Level 2 service-mains, or asbestos-backed panel$3,500 – $6,500+

Why switchboard prices vary so much

1. What you're replacing

Swapping old ceramic rewireable fuses for modern circuit breakers and safety switches (RCDs) is the most common job and sits at the lower end. If the board itself is too small, corroded, or non-compliant, the whole enclosure gets replaced — that's more labour and materials, pushing the price up.

2. How many circuits and safety switches

Australian wiring rules require RCD protection on most circuits. An older Sydney home might have two or three circuits and no safety switches; a modern board could have a dozen or more individual RCBOs (combined breaker + safety switch). Every added circuit and device adds cost, but it's also what makes the board safe and compliant.

Where the money goes on a switchboard upgrade

Most of the cost is labour and compliance, not the parts. A licensed electrician has to safely isolate the supply, often coordinate with Ausgrid for a temporary disconnection, install and test every device, and issue a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work (CCEW). Older Sydney homes frequently throw up surprises — asbestos backing boards, deteriorated wiring tails, or no main switch — any of which adds time.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a switchboard upgrade cost in Sydney?

A basic upgrade from a fuse box to circuit breakers with safety switches typically runs $800–$1,500. A full switchboard replacement with new enclosure, RCBOs and surge protection is usually $1,500–$3,500. Three-phase boards, Level 2 service-mains work, or asbestos-backed panels can push the job to $3,500–$6,500 or more.

Do I legally need safety switches on my switchboard?

Australian wiring rules require RCD (safety switch) protection on most final subcircuits, including power points and lighting. When you upgrade a switchboard, your electrician will bring it up to current compliance, which means adding safety switches if your board doesn't already have them.

How long does a switchboard upgrade take?

A straightforward upgrade is usually done in a day, often with only a few hours of power interruption. Full replacements, or jobs that uncover asbestos backing boards or deteriorated wiring, can take longer.

How do I know if my switchboard needs upgrading?

Common signs include ceramic rewireable fuses, no safety switches, breakers that trip frequently, a burning smell or scorch marks, or a board too full to add new circuits. If your home still has the original board from decades ago, it's worth having it assessed.
