Do I need an engineer or SafeWork certification for scaffolding?
For standard low scaffolds in Australia, usually not. Under the work health and safety laws of every state and territory except Victoria, suspended, cantilevered, spur and hung scaffolds, and any scaffold a person or thing could fall more than 4 metres from, must not be used until a competent person confirms in writing (usually a handover certificate) that construction is complete. Non-standard designs such as cantilevers also need a structural (engineering) analysis to show they comply with AS/NZS 1576.1. Certification adds documentation, time and cost, so confirm it is included for any specialised scaffold.
What is the difference between a birdcage and a perimeter scaffold?
A perimeter scaffold runs around the outside of a building for facade access, while a birdcage is a full internal grid of scaffold used to reach high ceilings or soffits across an entire floor area. A birdcage uses far more material and labour, so it is priced higher. Verified bands are $2,000-$4,000 total.
How long can I keep the scaffold up for?
